KIRKBY STEPHEN TO ROBIN HOOD'S BAY
DAY TWO - KELD TO REETH 11.9 MILES
A view back at our overnight stop in the Keld Lodge as we descended into Keld.
The village is tucked away down in the valley bottom near the River Swale and not on a main road. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keld,_North_Yorkshire
A video of Swaledale and part of the C2C https://vimeo.com/108925796
The first view of the River Swale after leaving Keld where we crossed it via a footbridge.
Falls in East Stonesdale just above where the water joins the Swale. There are two routes from here, follow the River Swale or as it was a nice day we chose the high level route.
View south down Swaledale as the path gradually climbed up the north side.
The view from Stony Hill looking down the valley.
The ruins of Crackpot Hall http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keld,_North_Yorkshire
From there the path climbs into the wild Swinner Gill.
These are the waterfalls in the Gill near the remains of mine workings
From there the C2C climbs steadily up along side a stream called East Grain.
Steadily the route reaches the grouse moors above.
A vehicular track is reached which takes the C2C over the watershed to the Lownathwaite Lead Mines and down into Gunnerside Gill.
Part of the remains of the mines. The route drops steeply down into the Gill at this point crosses the beck and then goes steeply up the other side onto Melbecks Moor. http://www.outofoblivion.org.uk/record.asp?id=262
The remains of the Hush mining are traversed across Melbecks Moor
There then begins a gradual descent to Level House Bridge in Hard Level Gill
From the bridge it is along Mill Gill or Old Gang Beck for a couple of miles to a road near Surrender Bridge.
Shortly after the road and after a stretch of moor this steep descent and climb up to Cringley Bottom was a surprise.
The route continues along the moorland edge high above the village of Healaugh and the River Swale again and although it is difficult to make out in this photo taken near Riddings Farm the small town of Reeth came into few. http://www.reeth.org/
As we descended down the walled Skelgate Lane we had to put the cagoules on as it started to rain. Fortunately we reached our overnight stay at The Buck Hotel before it came onto rain hard. Those who came in later were drenched. http://www.buckhotel.co.uk
