KIRKBY STEPHEN TO ROBIN HOOD'S BAY
DAY FIVE - DANBY WISKE TO OSMOTHERLEY - 12.10 MILES
There were plenty more fields to cross on Day Five, not much to photograph, but the North York Moors gradually got larger on the sky line.
Rape fields were a bright picture as we left Danby Wiske
After half a mile along Danby Lane the main London to Darlington railway is crossed via a road bridge.
A well worn but narrow cross field path approaching Oaktree Hill.
After passing through a series of farms we came across this entertaining stile at Wray House. There is a white skeleton on the left post and a rat on the board to the right. There was a counter in the box below.
Next was a rail crossing.
This is the branch off the main east coast line that goes to Middlesbrough. A long straight section so no safety problem here.
By the time we reached Sydal Lodge the terrain was more undulating and the North York Moors were getting more prominent. The next real hurdle was crossing the A19 - a lot of care required.
We stopped for a picnic lunch here on the green by the side of this water tower in Ingleby Arncliffe, a Grade II listed water tower, built in 1915 to supply water to the village
The other half of the village is called Ingleby Cross and we stopped at the Blue Bell Inn for liquid refreshment. http://the-blue-bell-inn.co.uk/
The easier crossing of the A172 was next and after passing the church and Arncliffe Hall http://www.parksandgardens.org/places-and-people/site/143 we started the climb into the North York Moors.
We lost the track in Arncliffe Woods for 10 minutes but eventually got up onto a track called the Bank and after passing through South Wood got this lovely view back across the Vale of Mowbray.
We took the footpath through Siddle Farm down into Osmotherley where we were to stay at The Golden Lion (next to the red telephone box in this picture). http://www.goldenlionosmotherley.co.uk/
