COAST TO COAST MAY 2015 - DAY THREE

KIRKBY STEPHEN TO ROBIN HOOD'S BAY

DAY THREE - REETH TO RICHMOND - 11.9 MILES

It had rained all night but had just about stopped by the time it came to leave the hotel and walk down the road to Reeth Bridge across the village green.

There were mini-buses with Duke of Edinburgh award teams setting out as well.

The view from the bridge of the swollen Swale.

A path leads to Grinton Bridge passing a camp site and this picture is lower down on the river side path.

The C2C then takes a higher path through fields to the north of the river. Clouds still  enveloped the high Pennines.
The path leads to Marrick Priory now an outdoor and education centre

View looking back at the former Priory.

The C2C climbs up through the aptly named Steps Wood.

After a couple more fields the village of Marrick is entered.

This is the path descending to Ellers an isolated farm by North Gill. The C2C then climbs passing Hollins Farm and then joins a road.

The road is used to descend to Marske a small village on Marske Beck a tributary of the River Swale. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marske,_Richmondshire  After a picnic lunch by the river we then headed for the signposted tea rooms near the church.

View towards Applegarth Scar from the road out of Marske.

The footbridge over a stream immediately before the climb up to a bridleway that runs along below the Scar.

A steady 10 minute climb.

The reward this view back up the River Swale.

The bridleway leads all the way to Richmond, this is the track near West Applegarth.

East Applegarth Farm

After passing  through Whitecliffe Wood the town of Richmond came into view.

The Keep of Richmond Castle dominates the market town

We made our way to our B&B at 66 Frenchgate http://66frenchgate.co.uk/ which is at the higher end of this picturesque cobbled Street near the Green Howards memorial.

The exploration of Richmond commenced at 17:00 and we descended via the church to these waterfalls on the River Swale using the town trail. http://www.richmond.org/pdf/guide_pdf/towntrail.pdf

This is the lovely path below the walls of the Castle and the view upstream along the River Swale

On reaching the market square which was originally within the outer walls of the town we adjourned to the Castle Inn for a very reasonably priced meal. We all commented that the portions you get in Yorkshire pubs far exceed those normally found in southern parts.
